Mint and Freeze Authority on Solana: What They Mean for Your Tokens
4 min read · Updated
Every Solana token is created with two special powers that can be kept or given up: mint authority and freeze authority. Whether a creator kept them tells you a lot about what they can do to holders later.
Mint authority
Mint authority lets its holder create new tokens at any time. A creator who keeps it can print millions of tokens and sell them into the pool, diluting everyone else to nothing. Almost every legitimate memecoin revokes mint authority so the supply is fixed.
Freeze authority
Freeze authority lets its holder freeze any wallet’s tokens, so that wallet can no longer sell or transfer them. Stablecoins like USDC keep it for legal reasons; a memecoin has no good reason to. A memecoin with active freeze authority can trap buyers just like a honeypot.
What “revoked” means
Revoking sets the authority to nobody, permanently. It cannot be turned back on. Pump.fun tokens are created with both authorities revoked.
How to check
Paste the token’s mint address into the CoinsWavez rug checker. The contract checks show “Mint function: disabled” and “Freeze authority: disabled” when both are revoked.
