What Does Renounced Ownership Mean in Crypto?
4 min read · Updated
Many token contracts on Ethereum, BNB Chain and Base have an owner with special powers. “Ownership renounced” means the owner gave those powers up. It is a good sign, but not a guarantee.
What an owner can do
- Change buy and sell taxes
- Pause trading or blacklist wallets
- Mint new tokens (if the contract allows it)
- Change limits on wallet size or transaction size
What renouncing does
Renouncing transfers ownership to the zero address, which nobody controls. After that, owner-only functions can never be called again, so the rules of the token are locked in.
Tricks to watch for
The CoinsWavez contract checks flag hidden owners, reclaimable ownership and proxies alongside the renounced status.
- Hidden owner: a second admin role that still has powers
- Reclaimable ownership: a function that lets the old owner take it back
- Upgradeable proxy: the code itself can be swapped for a new version
- The developer still holds a big share of the supply and can simply sell
